Sweat is salty for a reason. Sodium is the primary electrolyte lost in sweat, and it's essential for maintaining fluid balance, blood pressure, and proper nerve and muscle function. Without enough sodium, water can't do its job—and chugging plain water without replacing lost electrolytes can actually make things worse.
The Science
Sodium is a key extracellular ion, regulating osmotic balance and nerve conduction. When we sweat, we lose both water and sodium. Rehydrating with water alone can dilute blood sodium levels, potentially causing hyponatremia—an often-overlooked but dangerous condition. Research shows that sodium intakes for active individuals in hot climates may need to be significantly higher than standard guidelines (Hew- Butler et al., 2015).
Why Lyte?
Lyte is formulated with 1000mg of sodium per serving—scientifically aligned with the real-world needs of athletes, manual laborers, and anyone sweating in Africa’s heat.
